Fox -Hunting: Fact or Fiction

My Horse Doesn't Jump:

All jumps can be bypassed, and they are not huge. We always have a "hill topper" group which is lead by a field master. The hill toppers do not jump and ride at a slightly slower pace.

My horse must be the "big hunter type":

A good mount has no size, shape or color. A great hunt horse will stop and go as you command and is tolerant of horses and hounds.

They run hell bent for leather: It could be dangerous:

The field runs only when following a field master. A hunting pace is often described as "hurry up and wait", not a continuous gallop.

One must arrive, first time out in traditional hunting attire:

No - We dress in hard hats and boots for safety. Our hunting coats are waterproof and warm. We dress as a courtesy to the landowners

whose land we are privileged to ride on. During cubbing season, riding britches and a green polo shirt are worn. During formal season a clean white shirt, tie and jacket is acceptable.

When does the season begin:

We begin cubbing in August on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The formal meets begin mid September. We hunt on Wednesdays and Sundays until freezing weather (usually December).

First time out:

Dress neatly, arrive early to pay your cap fee and present your signed waiver.

Please remember your helmet. Ride in the back of the field to be sure your horse is

comfortable. Also try to keep quiet, much of the sport is what you see and hear.
